This was a neatly punchy example for me, the internal monologue going something like this: "Yeah, I've totally heard people express understanding for that killer guy or say that he should be let go, but I can't imagine anyone clamoring for him to be put in charge of the army on the basis of that experience. That would be the most tenuous of possible connections, so patently ridiculous, like — oh wait, like half of Trump's Cabinet nominees, both this time and last..."
I haven't come up with any useful ideas for how to reason in our current world; you seem to be a step ahead of me in that respect, at least with an axiom! Most of what I've internalized is just like trying to describe or illustrate it in various ways -- like an interesting column weeks or months ago using a particular religious denomination's bylaws as another example showing how principles are apt to yield in the face of power.
Sorry for these unchained and non-actionable thoughts. I wanted to at least let you know that I read what you wrote and felt something from it :-)
